<li>Increasing emphasis on grants that address pressing societal issues, such as climate change, public health, and social inequality. For example, there has been a surge in grants for renewable energy research, community health initiatives and programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in various fields.</li>
<li>Growing popularity of collaborative grant programs that encourage partnerships between multiple stakeholders. These initiatives recognize the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and collaboration across sectors to tackle complex challenges.</li>
<li>Rising interest in supporting sustainability of projects that not only deliver immediate results but also have the potential for lasting positive effects on communities, ecosystems, and economies.</li>
<li>Advances in data analytics and artificial intelligence that enable funding agencies to better assess the potential impact and feasibility of grant proposals, leading to more informed decision-making.</li>
<li>Intense competition for funding, with many worthy projects vying for limited resources. Donors are placing an emphasis on funding projects that are innovative, have wide impact, address significant issues of relevance to them, and are well written.</li>
</ul>
<p>In response to these challenges and opportunities, there is a growing emphasis on capacity building and support services to help applicants strengthen their grant-writing skills, develop robust project proposals, and navigate the intricacies of grant procurement. Organizations such as universities, non-profits, and government agencies are offering <a title="Grant Writing Workshops" href="/workshops/online/live" target="_blank">training programs</a>, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to empower aspiring grant seekers and increase their chances of success. For example, we at the Grant Training Center have seen a threefold increase in the number of professionals we train in our Grant Development workshops, as well as in the requests we receive for the <a title="Proposal Reviews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">grant reviews</a> and editing of grant proposals.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>New and seasoned grant writers are encountering increased challenges in seeking funding for their research and organizations. Many of these challenges are beyond their control. In this blog, I will briefly outline five of the most common barriers. In subsequent blogs, I will comprehensively address each one:</p>
<p><strong>Increased Competition</strong>:</p>
<p>As the demand for grant funding continues to rise, the competition among organizations and individuals <a title="Find Donors" href="/individual_membership" target="_blank">seeking grants</a> has become more intense. Currently, the funding levels for many federal grants is ranging around the 90<sup>th</sup> percentile and above.</p>
<p><strong>Evolving Donor Priorities</strong>:</p>
<p>Donor priorities may shift over time due to changes in political, economic, or social landscapes, which require grant writers to adapt their proposals accordingly. For example, as presidential administrations emphasize their research and educational priorities, funding also changes to reflect these interests.</p>
<p><strong>Demonstrating Impact and Sustainability</strong>:</p>
<p>Funders increasingly expect grant applicants to demonstrate their projects’ potential impact and sustainability. Grant writers must develop strategies for effectively measuring and communicating the outcomes and institutionalization of their initiatives to secure funding and ensure long-term viability for their organizations.</p>
<p><strong>Limited Resources and Capacity</strong>:</p>
<p>Many organizations that increasingly face internal budget cuts often reduce resources necessary for grant writing efforts, such as staff time and <a title="Grant Writing Workshops" href="/workshops/online/live" target="_blank">training</a>. These cuts pose a significant challenge for grant writers, who must often juggle multiple responsibilities and priorities while pursuing funding opportunities.</p>
<p><strong>Adapting to Digital Platforms</strong></p>
<p>With the increasing digitization of grant application processes, grant writers need to adapt to numerous online platforms and technologies. This may require taking extra time to learn new software and digital communication strategies to effectively submit their project proposals to funders.</p>
<p>So, what must grant writers and organizations do in the face of these obstacles? First and foremost, institutions need to understand that internal cuts result in much larger consequences for external giving. Secondly, grant seekers must constantly stay current on evolving donor priorities, digital platforms and technologies. Thirdly, grant writers must ensure sustainability by institutionalizing their initial funding so that they become ongoing efforts, such as train the trainers programs, infusing student learning in existing courses, or creating focus groups that can continue to serve their communities after the donor’s funding ends.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The participants in my grant writing and designing <a title="Grant Writing Workshops" href="/workshops/online/live" target="_blank">workshops</a> frequently ask me if AI is now able or will eventually be able to write their grant proposals. In one instance, a participant told me that AI wrote their grant, which was funded. It is difficult for me to believe that AI can possibly write a grant without the input of the grant writer. The following are some thoughts on what AI can and cannot do at this juncture in its development.</p>
<p>AI technologies, including natural language processing models like GPT-3, are capable of generating text content and assisting with various writing tasks. However, writing a grant proposal involves more than just generating text; it requires a deep understanding of the specific goals, objectives, and requirements of the proposal, as well as knowledge of the subject matter and the context in which the proposal will be submitted.</p>
<p>While AI can help with certain aspects of the writing process, such as generating introductory or background sections, it may not be able to fully replace human expertise in crafting a persuasive and <a title="Proposal Reviews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">well-structured</a> grant proposal. Human input is crucial for understanding the unique aspects of a project, tailoring the proposal to the needs of the funding organization, and incorporating a compelling narrative. This involves a level of domain-specific knowledge and creativity that AI does not fully possess.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering using AI to help with your grant request, it&#8217;s advisable to stay updated on the latest developments, particularly in the field of natural language processing. Additionally, always review and refine any AI-generated content to ensure it meets the specific requirements of your proposal and effectively communicates your project&#8217;s goals and significance.</p>
<p>That said, the field of AI is dynamic and advancements are made regularly. It&#8217;s possible that, in the future, more sophisticated AI models or dedicated tools could offer substantial assistance in writing grant requests.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When the donor is expecting excellence, resourcefulness, and a keen awareness of how best to assure outcomes that make a difference, the best way to meet their needs is to incorporate the three essentials for grant success. The three essentials for grant success are ingredients, preparation, and presentation. All of these are crucial, equally important, and required for success.</p>
<p><strong>Ingredients     </strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Excellent match between the grant proposal and the donor’s priorities</li>
<li>Answering the “so what” question of your research</li>
<li>Simple prose and white space on the paper</li>
<li>Examples of the approach</li>
<li>A clearly written proposal</li>
<li>The grand finale: the significance of the results</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Preparation</strong></p>
<p>Read the entire RFP, from top to bottom. Once you clearly understand the directions that the donor provided, you can begin to put the pieces of the proposal together. Double check that you and your organization are eligible for the grant you are seeking, and that your project or research aligns with the donor’s mission. This makes certain that the <a title="Find Donors" href="/individual_membership" target="_blank">match is made</a> between yourself and the donor, and preparation of the pieces of the proposal can begin. These segments will be the product of extensive research on your part to move in the right direction. The pieces are:</p>
<ol>
<li>Abstract – This will take careful preparation since it is the most important part of the application. It is the first impression, the precise summary of the entire proposal, and the evidence that success is possible.</li>
<li>Introduction – This is where you will present the problem or question to be addressed. The “so what” question for your project or research must be apparent, and should begin or lead into the narrative.</li>
<li>Need Statement/Statement of Significance – This is where the convincing argument for the project takes place. You will tell your impressive story, citing research and examples with enthusiasm and clarity.</li>
<li>Plan of Operation/Methodology – This is the heart of the proposal. Your plan should be tightly structured and consist of the goal (or hypothesis), objectives (or Specific Aims), and activities. Each segment will clearly illustrate the way your proposal will unfold in a logical manner. The evaluation follows, which should be clearly outlined in the incremental measurements of each activity – and these will be used to ensure your success in meeting your goal.</li>
<li>Outcomes and deliverables– This will be the section that demonstrates how the outcomes have unfolded, and what you are delivering to your constituents and the donor. In short, this is the resulting product of your proposal.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Presentation</strong></p>
<p>Your presentation should be memorable. Don’t assume that reviewers will overlook sloppiness because your idea is phenomenal. You can <a href="https://granttrainingcenter.com/proposal_review">achieve a superior presentation</a> with images, graphs, and Gantt charts, which are easy to understand and memorable. Most importantly, if your proposal will make a significant impact, it should be stated as such. For instance, provide examples of how your work will make a difference, change the field, save lives, or set the stage for future change. Whether the presentation necessitates the elegance of a fine dining restaurant or the simplicity of a well-prepared meal at home, the true mark of success lies in what was expected and what has been delivered in an impressive manner.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The pool of funds available for grants in the US is steadily shrinking given that funding is similar from year to year, and those funds are not keeping up with inflation and labor costs. Also, grant funding has been dramatically reduced in certain federal funding agencies and in others it has fallen by 20-25 percent, meaning that most academics are spending valuable time writing applications that end up being rejected. With this problem in mind, universities have an important role to play in assisting faculty to be successful in their grant applications. Universally, an institution that succeeds in its external funding efforts is one that develops a culture for grant procurement. To develop this culture, institutions should include and encourage this undertaking in its strategic plan, and throughout all areas of the university.</p>
<p>Most US institutions of higher education encourage faculty to apply for external funding, but the assistance they provide varies extensively. Teaching institutions, now more than ever, stress the importance of research. Unfortunately, due to the heavy teaching loads, many provide little if any assistance to faculty, while at the same time expecting them to submit successful grant requests. Among the most well-funded institutions, including R1 Doctoral Universities (very high research activity) and R2 Doctoral Universities (high research activity), assistance given to faculty varies, but all financially support projects that lead to faculty success in procuring external funding.</p>
<p>The following, although not inclusive, are some of the necessary infrastructure support steps an institution needs to take to assure increased funding and faculty support:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Institutional level</strong>: This includes development of an administrative unit, such as a Sponsored Research Office, which will support many grant-related activities such as grant searches, grant compliance with the Requests for Proposals (RFPs), budget development and grant submissions. The university should recruit and pay graduate research assistants and financially and philosophically support departments that encourage and assist faculty in their funding pursuits. Some of these areas might be <a title="Proposal Reviews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">content reviews</a>, <a title="Proposal Reviews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">editing</a>, evaluation and statistical services.</li>
<li><strong>Departmental level</strong>: On the departmental level, the key faculty incentives are salary increases and reduced teaching loads. Also, the departmental goals should include funding success in the tenure and promotion criteria. In addition, many departments hire support staff to assist faculty in grant seeking and writing.</li>
<li><strong>Individual level</strong>: Faculty should be encouraged to augment their grant writing skills by attending ongoing extensive workshops sponsored by their department or conducted by <a title="Grant Training" href="/workshops/online/live" target="_blank">external contractors</a>. Another essential activity is creating partnerships and mentorships between the established senior and junior faculty in order for the former to review proposals and recommend changes. Ongoing mock grant review panels, whereby senior faculty review and score junior faculty proposals, are extremely helpful in order for faculty to see how their proposals will be critiqued and scored by the donor agency panels.</li>
</ul>
<p>Other key aspects are visits by grant program officers, sharing and dissecting of successful proposals, online tutorials, departmental writing retreats, centers of research excellence, and standing committees that can work with faculty on a continuous basis. All of these must be institutionalized and conducted throughout the year. Faculty need to be incentivized and encouraged to attend the training, mentoring and other related activities. Coordination between all areas of the institution is essential. In addition, the orientation for all newly entering faculty should stress the importance of research, grant procurement and the assistance that the university provides in those respects.</p>
<p>From my extensive experience in working with universities throughout the nation, those that implement a culture of grant procurement including as many as possible of the above activities are the institutions with the highest funding success rate.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A 2015 meta-analysis of more than 1000 articles with advice to proposal writers showed that most of the top 10 recommendations focus on strategic positioning and project design.<sup><a href="#sdfootnote1sym" name="sdfootnote1anc">1</a></sup> I’ve seen scores of presentations advising faculty how to write more <a title="Proposal Reivews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">competitive grant proposals</a> and I rarely hear anything besides these. Only one of the top 10 recommendations deals with writing per se. It says to “describe activities and significance persuasively, concisely, and clearly.”</p>
<p>What does that mean in practical terms?</p>
<p>It turns out that professional writers—novelists, essayists, and journalists—have a lot to say about that. If you google “writers on writing” you’ll find hundreds of quotes. Here are five of my favorites and how they apply to proposal writing:</p>
<h3>Elmore Leonard: “Leave out the parts the readers tend to skip.”</h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Simply put, most proposals have too much information. A Pew study showed TV weather reporters actually became more skeptical of climate change as they accumulated knowledge. Articles, book chapters, and books aim to inform; proposals are meant to persuade. To do so, give an expert audience only as much background as it needs to see that you’re grounded in best practice; focus on what you’re doing that’s new. Conversely, give lay readers only what they need to understand the elegance of what you’re proposing and what they’ll get from it.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Practically, this also alleviates the ubiquitous and crippling struggle against page limits.</p>
<h3>Steven King: “Kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler’s heart”</h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">This can apply in several ways. You might have a profound insight that puts a whole new wrinkle on the field but doesn’t change your work plan in any meaningful way. Discussing it here distracts the reader from other concepts. Save it for a book or article. Or, you want to do something that is really cool and are burning to share it… but there isn’t enough time or treasure in the budget to actually do it right. Leave it out of the proposal and talk about it with friends over a distilled beverage. The most common way this comes up is when you share your document with colleagues and there’s something that no one understands. Maybe that idea isn’t ready for prime time.</p>
<h3>Joan Didion: &#8220;All I know about grammar is its infinite power. To shift the structure of a sentence alters the meaning as definitely and inflexibly as the position of a camera alters the meaning of the object photographed.&#8221;</h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Gopen and Swan’s seminal article “The Science of Scientific Writing” cites research showing that readers interpret your writing based on six expectations.<sup><a href="#sdfootnote2sym" name="sdfootnote2anc">2</a></sup> Among these: they expect to find any new or important information at the end of a discursive unit (i.e., a clause, sentence, paragraph, or section). If it’s elsewhere, they are likely to miss it and interpret what is there as your main point. Conversely, they expect to find context and perspective at the start of the unit. Violating these expectations increases the likelihood that your writing will be misinterpreted.</p>
<h3>Kurt Vonnegut: &#8220;Give the reader at least one character he can root for.&#8221;</h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The most persuasive arguments use three rhetorical devices: logos (logic), ethos (authority), and pathos (emotion)—but the academic argument shuns pathos. Granted, it isn’t relevant for most single investigator research projects—but it is somewhat relevant for center grant proposals, more so for projects that include trainees, and highly relevant for fellowship applications. Even on single investigator research proposals, you can make an emotional connection with the reader using metaphors to bring your vision into their world. Effective use of pathos to augment strong arguments from logic and authority can provide a competitive edge.</p>
<h3>George R.R. Martin: “There are two types of writers: architects and gardeners.”</h3>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Architects plan in advance – where will everything go, what each paragraph will say. Gardeners plant a seed but don’t know how the plant will develop. Martin is a proud gardener, but he doesn’t have to address formal review criteria. You, on the other hand, need architectural drawings—storyboards—that lay out the structure and content of each section (and even each paragraph). That’s how to ensure your proposal addresses all the review criteria, mirrors the language in the program announcement, and gives proportional attention to the factors that go into the evaluation.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The key to maintaining a successful nonprofit organization is to have a diverse fundraising strategy that builds upon your organization&#8217;s core strengths and resources. It is essential, therefore, to know your organization, understand your place in the giving community, and build on your strengths and resources.</p>
<p>Once, when I worked for a small, under-resourced organization, we created a project that perfectly fit a community need, was structured for efficiency, and had a large return on investment from donors. I approached an eager donor who was familiar with our efforts, our successes, and our available resources. I asked him for $1.3M. He told me he loved the project, was thrilled with our design, and really wanted to give us the gift. Then, he said, &#8220;unfortunately, your organization doesn’t have the ability to receive a gift as large as $1.3M.&#8221; I was dumbfounded. We had done everything right in evaluating, justifying, and planning a strategy to meet an essential need in our community. Yet, as an organization, we didn’t have the operational structure to receive a large donation. In that instant of excitement and disappointment, I realized that all fundraising efforts should only start after a close examination of an organization’s situation, their board, their staff, their infrastructure and their standing in the community. Each of these will influence an organization’s potential for raising funds.</p>
<p>The key steps in the process of assessing your fundraising capacity are: understanding how your organization is perceived internally and externally, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and prioritizing your efforts and resources. Likewise, a solid market analysis is essential in developing a diversified and successful fundraising strategy.</p>
<p>After these initial strategic considerations, the next level of capacity building is to determine the size of your potential donor database. Once you <a href="/individual_membership" target="_blank">identify these donors</a>, begin making the match between you and them and solicit funds to develop projects of mutual interest.</p>
<p>Specifically, the steps to build your organization into a financial success are:</p>
<ol>
<li>Know your organization by creating:
<ol type="a">
<li>Strategic plan</li>
<li>Market analysis</li>
<li>Needs assessment</li>
<li>Current assessment of potential donors</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Build a successful board consisting of:
<ol type="a">
<li>Community leaders</li>
<li>Business leaders</li>
<li>Political leaders</li>
<li>Philanthropic leaders</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>First level fundraising strategies consist of:
<ol type="a">
<li>Classic and contemporary media presence, from local news to social media</li>
<li>Regularly scheduled newsletters and updates</li>
<li>Direct solicitations to the donors you already know</li>
<li>Building member databases
<ol type="i">
<li>Collect emails at public events</li>
<li>Provide free membership while sharing emails</li>
<li>Use current members to introduce new members</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Annual appeal letters to donors
<ol type="i">
<li>Tell a story</li>
<li>Explain how the potential donor can help</li>
<li>Ask for the money</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Exploring area philanthropies &amp; corporate donors from
<ol type="i">
<li>Community foundations</li>
<li>Local businesses</li>
</ol>
</li>
</ol>
</li>
<li>Second level fundraising strategies consist of:
<ol type="a">
<li>Grants</li>
<li>Small to medium-sized special events</li>

<p>Fundraising strategies vary from one type of organization to another. If the organization is small, it is best to employ a strategy that builds your supporter database and directly solicits them for cash donations. In contrast, a large, established organization may be in the perfect position to host a sizable gala.</p>
<p>When your organization has a track record of successes, strategic efforts should be made to attract the most powerful and influential board members. These board members will bring credibility to your organization as you begin to seek larger donations. As your board stature grows, so will your options in fundraising.</p>
<p>An honest assessment of your organization and your place in the community will help you understand the best approach to take to <a href="/workshops/inperson" target="_blank">effectively secure funds</a>. Thus, with broad community recognition, a strong track record of success, financial efficiency, and influential board members, you’ll be able to employ a large diversity of effective fundraising strategies.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How you will construct the direction and destination of your proposal depends on the initial questions that you ask. As you move from generating the topic, to gathering the background information, to adding focus to your research, you should begin with the open-ended questions of “how” and “why”, while at all times considering the “so what” question of your topic. In other words, why does this topic matter to you and why should it matter to others?</p>
<p>The questions that follow are catalysts that will help provide initial answers to where your research will start, but after answering them, you may discover that it might not be where your research will end up. These questions will not only shape your search for the answer(s) to the problem, but will also increase your understanding of additional and alternative information that will be needed to clarify the road map and direction of your project.</p>
<p>Although the list of questions that will assist you in constructing and focusing your project can be extensive, the ones below center on the idea, purpose, focus, approach and institutional support:</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Idea questions</b>: What is the argument you are making about your idea? Why is your idea timely, urgent, compelling, and unique? Why does your idea matter? How might others challenge your idea? What kind of sources will you need to support your idea?</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Purpose questions</b>: What is the purpose of your research? How will you achieve the purpose? What will change once your proposal is implemented? How will you know that changes have taken place as you implement the proposal?</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Narrowing your focus questions</b>: Why is your proposal needed to advance the studies within your field? How are your preliminary data relevant? Why did you choose this way of approaching the gap in knowledge versus other options? What results will be evaluated in your project? How will you evaluate the results? What difficulties might appear within your research plan? How is your research limited?</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Justifying the research questions: </b>Who cares about the postulation of your argument?<b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';"> </b>How is present opinion divided?<b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';"> </b>How important is it to have the right answer?<b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';"> </b>What are the implications of various possible answers?</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Research methods questions: </b>What are the variables to be measured during your research project? What population and samples will be used in your research project, including explanations of sampling and procedures? What methods will you apply to collect primary and secondary information? What might be any relevant biases in your methods and the means by which these biases would be overcome?</p>
<p><b style="font-family: 'Calibre-Semibold';">Institutional questions</b>: How will this project capitalize on your institution&#8217;s/department’s strengths? How will this project help your institution/department overcome some of its weaknesses? How will your institution/department support you to succeed?</p>
<p>Science begins by first asking relevant questions and then seeking answers. The manner in which your research will unfold will emerge from the critical questions that you will need to answer prior to building your research proposal. These questions will assist you in solidifying your idea and eventually lead you to critical, significant, and substantive insights into the purpose, focus, and methods of your research proposal.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my last blog, I outlined various problems that workshop participants mentioned as serious concerns in their grant writing process. In this blog, I will continue with additional factors they faced. Of equal concern and pertinence are the following:</p>

<li><strong>Planning Ahead: </strong>&#8220;What are the steps I need to take before I write?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p>Grant writing takes time. This includes excellent research, exceptional writing, understanding the donor’s mission, making the match, <a title="Grant Training Center Member Community" href="/membership_description" target="_blank">collaborating with colleagues</a>, planning strategically, and developing an outstanding business plan. If your proposal is prepared correctly, it will have higher chances of rising to the top of the competition and receiving the funds. In the planning process, laying out proposal steps clearly and realistically can be achieved by organizing the activities in terms of the time it will take to effectively accomplish them.</p>

<li><strong> Matching the Idea With the Donor: </strong>&#8220;How can you assure that you found the right donor?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p><strong> </strong>One of the most fatal mistakes any grant writer can make is to ignore the interests of the donor. &#8220;Making the match&#8221; means aligning your mission and your funding request with the donor’s mission. The closer both of you are in what you wish to accomplish, the more likely you will be funded. Also, looking at funded projects will give you a very good idea of the donor’s interests and focus. Ultimately, donors do not care what you need or want funded; they care about what they wish to fund.</p>

<li> <strong>Being Concise and to the Point: </strong>&#8220;What steps will narrow the scope of my proposal?&#8221;<strong>      </strong></li>
</ol>
<p><strong> </strong>One of the major reasons for proposal rejection is that the request is overly ambitious and tries to tackle far more than can be accomplished within the timeline of the grant. Rather than trying to solve every problem related to your request, focus on one or two issues that can realistically be resolved within budget and time constraints of the proposal. Also, many grants require the consideration of various potential factors before concluding that the idea is doable, focused, and promising. You need to envision as many of these elements as possible to be certain that you are on the right path. Narrowing the scope of your idea to a smaller scale is often a much safer and more successful approach.</p>

<li><strong>Knowing the Review Process: </strong>&#8220;How do I understand the proposal review process?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p>To successfully survive the <a title="Proposal Reviews" href="/proposal_review" target="_blank">review process</a>, you must know the review criteria by which you will be judged and who is reviewing your proposal. In some cases this is easy, but in others, where the process is blind, it is extremely difficult. In the latter case, you can ask the administrator in charge of the process what the experience and expertise of the reviewers will be. Your reviewers have a very short window to review your proposal and worse yet, an even shorter window for the panel discussion. The easier you make it for the reviewers to understand your idea, the greater your chances of being funded.</p>

<li><strong>Networking and Collaboration: </strong>&#8220;How do I identify collaborators to strengthen my proposal?&#8221;</li>
</ol>
<p>Creating effective partnerships requires collective vision, purpose, buy-in, and mutual respect. Without these elements, it is difficult to maintain the momentum of true collaboration. Each partner must be able to contribute knowledge and expertise that would be missing without their involvement. The complexity of many projects requires interdisciplinary efforts and networking. Understanding this, funding agencies now believe in the power of partnerships; and so should you.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, there are many components to a grant proposal. The first and most important is spending the time to understand the donor, then positioning all the pieces of the puzzle effectively together, and finally writing a stellar request. The pieces must include careful planning, focus, and collaboration.</p>
